Bill Barr, the US Attorney General, on Tuesday informed the Home Office of its decision and gave it a deadline to hand over all evidence they had on Alexanda Kotey and El Shafee ElSheikh to help bring a prosecution, according to UK and US officials. If Britain is unable to provide them with the materials, which includes wiretaps, intercepted communications and witness testimony, by mid-October Mr Barr's office threatened to hand the pair over to authorities in Iraq, where they are currently being held by the US military. “On behalf of the United States Department of Justice, I am writing to provide an assurance that, if the United Kingdom grants our mutual legal assistance request the United States will not seek the death penalty in any prosecutions it might bring against Alexanda Kotey and El Shafee Elsheikh, and, if imposed, the death penalty will not be carried out," read the letter sent by Mr Barr to Priti Patel, Home Secretary, on Tuesday. A Home Office official said on Wednesday that they "welcomed the developments".
